Soldering basics
Who’s afraid of the iron?

Safety · burns
The tip is 350–400 °C
Hotter than a pizza oven: it burns in less than a second. If it happens, don’t panic. Do this:
1 · Cool it, straight away
Cool running water for 20 minutes. Yes, really 20.
2 · Rings off
Take off rings and watches before it swells.
3 · Burn spray, cover loosely
After cooling: burn gel or spray from the first-aid kit, then cling film.
4 · Tell your trainer
Every time, even if it seems tiny. You won’t be in trouble.
First-aid kit + burn spray
Know where they are before you switch the iron on.
Big burn? Call 112
Bigger than your palm, on the face or hands, or big blisters.

Safety · soldering bench
Safe at the bench
The tip is hotter than any kitchen oven: around 350–400 °C. Do this first, every time.
Glasses on
Solder and flux can spit.
Fan or fresh air
The smoke is flux. Don’t breathe it.
Iron in its stand
Every time you let go. Hold the handle, never the metal.
Wash your hands
After soldering. No food or drinks at the bench.
Off when done
And let it cool before you pack it away.
Batteries away
No LiPo plugged in while you solder.
Free to use in your own trainings. Just tell people where you got it.

Heat the joint, not the solder
1
Iron on pad and wire
Heat both at once.
2
Feed solder into the joint
Not onto the iron. It melts on the hot metal.
1st solder
2nd iron
3
Solder away, then iron
Solder flows towards the heat.
2–3 s
4
Don’t move it
Hold still 2–3 seconds while it sets.
Never carry a drop of solder to the joint on the iron. The flux burns off and it won’t stick.

The FPV way: wire to pad
On drones we mostly solder a wire onto a flat pad. Tin both first, then they join in a second.
1
Tin the pad
A little dome of solder on the pad.
2–3 mm
2
Tin the wire
Strip 2–3 mm, twist, soak it with solder.
3
Hold and touch
Wire on the pad, touch with the iron. Both melt together.
gentle tug
4
Check it
Shiny, smooth, and the wire doesn’t move when you tug it gently.

Hot and quick
A hot iron for a short time beats a cool iron for a long time. Long heating cooks the board and can lift pads.

2–3 seconds per joint. Taking longer? Use a bigger tip and more flux, not more time. Starting points for leaded 63/37 solder; lead-free needs about 20–30 °C more.

Good joint, bad joints
Shiny little volcano = good. Anything else: reheat, add flux, try again.
Good
Shiny and smooth, a little volcano.
Cold
Dull and grainy. It moved, or the iron was too cool.
Blob
A ball on top. It never really stuck.
Too little
Strands showing. Weak, it will crack.
Bridge
Joins two pads: a short circuit!

Before the first battery
Five checks. Every build, every repair. This is how you never see the magic smoke.
1
Look
No blobs, no bridges, no stray bits of solder or wire.
2
Clean
Wipe the flux off with isopropyl alcohol, especially between + and –.
3
Beep test
Multimeter on continuity between + and –. It must NOT beep.
4
Red is +
Check the polarity on every power lead. Twice.
5
Smoke stopper
The first power-up goes through a smoke stopper, not straight from the battery.

Remember
Heat the joint, not the solder.
Soldering is gluing metal with melted metal: the iron heats the parts, the parts melt the solder, and a good joint is a shiny little volcano.
1
Glasses on. Iron back in its stand every time you let go.
2
Tin both first, then join them in a second.
3
Hot and quick: 2–3 seconds per joint.
